can be demonstrated by this quote regarding the Red Sox/A's series:
So... paying them more will solve your problem (of not being able to win a post season series to save your life)? How much exactly do they need to make... these guys who live the dream of millions of little kids, who get to do what they supossedly love, for quite a bit of money (when many people are putting up with something they hate just feed their families). What does it say about your team if you think that paying them more would make them play better or harder? These guys signed a contract when they came to the team, they make a certain amount and they should be expected to play their best.-----

I took the comment the other way, but even if he meant it in the way you interpreted: how demotivating is that to his current players? Oh, if only I had better, higher paid players and not you slugs, we would have won the series?

I think his quote implies that he would use the $50 million to buy *better* players, not to make the current players play harder. That's how baseball usually works for teams that have money. Let's give the A's some credit, they come up with pretty good teams without spending the money that others do. It's a weak excuse to fall back on, but I don't think he's questioning his players effort. Go Sox!!!!!!!!
