WHY, why, why, why.. do baseball players spit so much? They spit more than any other athletes, more than any other human on earth. WHY? I am a big enough dork to attempt to research this, but all I found was stuff talking about smokeless tobacco. Ok, fine. But WHY do they need to chew tobacco. WHY, WHY?-----

actually, this is another theory I could buy into. I just had an extended conversation with a guy from work (who isn't from the US). He can't fathom these guys get paid so much when they maybe work a grand total of 20 in a game - and that is a stretch.
Maybe they have spitting contents. Spitting olympics if you will. Something to pass the time. Did you see how far it went before I bat in the in the third inning? Roll the tape - that baby went 15 feet!

hmmm... i've got a reason, but you and other baseball fans might not like it... i think perhaps they spit (and scratch, and also hit each other's butts) simply... to have something to do. baseball is sooo boring! i mean when it's your turn, sure, there's stuff to do. but the other 2 and a half hours? and i guess they can't quite read a book (lol). how they chose spitting as a valuable activity, as opposed to chewing gum, though, i can't explain.

hey...as long as they don't spit on me or themselves its all good.
I just drooled half a glass of water into my lap. Is there a hole in my lip???? I am starting to think I need a lip ring just so I have an excuse for this crap.
Am I off topic?

yep...i asked her about it again tonight and she confirmed that the dirt/dust issue is a problem. (or that she's spitting out sunflower seeds!)
and she did say she won't be scratching herself in public either.
big sigh from mom here.

heh! or start up with the chewing tobacco, right? One of the things I did learn in my brief research was just because it's smokeless, doesn't mean it's harmless. I'm hoping for explanation like: there is a lot of dust that gets in their mouths or something. That I can get my head around.
and that scratching themselves! sometimes I ask myself if they remember they are on tv.

only thing i can tell you is that jr. must watch a LOT of baseball, because when she plays softball - she SPITS on the field all the time. when i've asked her about it, she said, "it's just part of the GAME, mom!"
as long as she doesn't start scratching herself, i guess i'm cool with it.
